Job Searching When You Are Over 50

Are you an older person (over age 50) and looking for work? Were you among the thousands that were laid off during the recession? Are you working hard trying to find a way to get back into the workforce?

There are several ways to market yourself that will help you get ready for the current job market. It can be rather demoralizing when you think of how much money you were making and to know that it is unlikely that you will be able to start in a new job with that kind of money.

When you are preparing your resume, realize and reveal your unique skills and strengths. Also acknowledge and fix your weaknesses. Sometimes those weaknesses can be physical or attitudinal as well as work-related with these having to do with how the job market has changed. All these can be fixed! Example: If you are looking or acting older than you want, you can update your dress, hair style etc. Be sure to show your work ethic as well as your personality, and of course, your willingness to change and be as proficient as any younger employee.

Please read our article Is Hiring Seniority Worth the Money and follow our job seeker tips for advice. Also, be sure to opt into our email marketing campaign for further guidance and help in getting you ready to compete with the younger people in the job market.  You can also follow us on Pinterest and Like us on Facebook!

Is Your Job Making You Happy?

Are you happy at work?  Do some days seem gray when you would like to be anywhere other than on the job?

I’m sure that there are days that you feel completely miserable and seem to be waiting for the proverbial shoe to drop.  Sometimes the negativity you feel can be solved by just figuring out what is causing this feeling.  Is it a co-worker, your actual job, or just a portion of certain tasks in that job?

Maybe your co-workers are just as unhappy as you are and if you could swap certain tasks, it would help everyone be in a better place. It helps to be involved with your co-workers, somewhat but not to the extent that you visit during work hours.

Please read our article 7 Tips to Become More Organized.  Often becoming better organized can solve those areas of discontent as well. If you are better organized, it can positively affect your attitude and make some of that unhappiness go away.

Turn A Job Interview Fail Into An Interview That Lands You The Job!

Blog post photo

Found on buzzfeed .com

We all know that there a lot of things to say and do in an interview, but all too often, there isn’t enough emphasis placed on the things that you should NEVER say in an interview.

There are some items that you need to be aware of that are extremely important, i.e., making excuses as to why you are late for the interview.

You should ALWAYS give yourself extra time in case of traffic or car problems; and always take more than one copy of your resume with you; you don’t want to assume that H.R. has given a copy to the hiring manager for the interview. Always take at least two pens with you, making sure that they both work. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS turn off your cell phone before the interview starts.

Of course, these aren’t all of the things to be aware of so please read our article Ten Fatal Interviewing Mistakes.

Be sure to opt into our email course and follow our interview tips in order to be fully prepared to have a great interview and to get to your ultimate goal of procuring that job!

How Much Importance Have You Been Placing on Your Cover Letter?

Cover letter – How much importance have you been placing on your cover letter?  Do you think that you have covered all of your skills in your resume?  While using the same format and general information that you have used in your resume, you need to consider making the connection of your skills, experience, and your interests as well as relevance to the position you are applying for.

Be sure to mention up front, the position and organization you are applying for.  Your cover letter should supplement your resume, not replace it, nor recreate it, but gives you the opportunity to show your accomplishments relative to the position you are applying for.  In addition, it will give you the opportunity to show what a good fit you will be for that position and that you did your research on the company.  Be sure to thank them in advance for their consideration of you for the position.

Please read our article How to Write an Effective Cover Letter and follow our resume tips.  You can opt into our email course for advice on how to become more competitive in the job market. For more tips like these, follow us on Pinterest, and “like” us on Facebook!
