We all know that there a lot of things to say and do in an interview, but all too often, there isn’t enough emphasis placed on the things that you should NEVER say in an interview.

There are some items that you need to be aware of that are extremely important, i.e., making excuses as to why you are late for the interview.

You should ALWAYS give yourself extra time in case of traffic or car problems; and always take more than one copy of your resume with you; you don’t want to assume that H.R. has given a copy to the hiring manager for the interview. Always take at least two pens with you, making sure that they both work. And ALWAYS, ALWAYS turn off your cell phone before the interview starts.

Of course, these aren’t all of the things to be aware of so please read our article Ten Fatal Interviewing Mistakes.

How Much Importance Have You Been Placing on Your Cover Letter?

Cover letter – How much importance have you been placing on your cover letter?  Do you think that you have covered all of your skills in your resume?  While using the same format and general information that you have used in your resume, you need to consider making the connection of your skills, experience, and your interests as well as relevance to the position you are applying for.

Be sure to mention up front, the position and organization you are applying for.  Your cover letter should supplement your resume, not replace it, nor recreate it, but gives you the opportunity to show your accomplishments relative to the position you are applying for.  In addition, it will give you the opportunity to show what a good fit you will be for that position and that you did your research on the company.  Be sure to thank them in advance for their consideration of you for the position.
